Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a criteria air pollutant and can be emitted directly from industrial processes and combustion, or as a secondary pollutant from the reaction of nitric oxide with ozone (NO3O). It has a distinct brownish color, and can be detected at concentrations of few ppm through its distinctive smell. However, over time people can lose their sense of smell to NO2.

Depending on the application, different types of nitrogen dioxide gas detectors are available. Personal safety monitors require detection in the ppm range for OSHA and NIOSH limits, while atmospheric and environmental monitoring systems need sensitivity in the parts per billion (ppb) range. For the latter, chemiluminescence detection is commonly used.
These chemiluminescence analyzers can be field calibrated using standard calibration equipment and reference gases that are traceable to NIST primary standards. The calibration is validated by running it through a series of tests, including temperature and humidity extremes, to ensure the sensors are functioning as intended.
Another option for NO2 monitoring is an electrochemical sensor-based system that detects NO and its autooxidation product NO2 in inspired gas. The sensor reacts with the oxygen present in the sample to trigger an electrochemical redox reaction that generates a light signal. The intensity of this light is proportional to the NO2 concentration in the sample. The measured concentration is then displayed on the display screen.
