You’ve probably noticed that sometimes your vagina has a slightly fishy smell. That’s natural, because it’s a result of the bacteria that live in and around your vaginal canal.
5 Ways to Get Rid of Vaginal Odor
If the get rid of vaginal odor doesn’t go away on its own and doesn’t smell like something you’ve eaten, it might be a sign of an underlying condition that needs to be treated. That could include a yeast infection, or other issues, like vaginitis, trichomoniasis, and bacterial vaginosis, notes the Cleveland Clinic.
Odors can be caused by a number of things, including diet, sweating, and hormonal changes. But most of the time, a normal vaginal odor is no big deal.
The most common odors are a little tangy or sour, which is a normal reaction to some of the healthy bacteria in your vagina, says Jessica Shepherd, MD, an ob-gyn and women’s health expert in Dallas, Texas. It can also smell a bit metallic, which is a common side effect of blood that’s shed during your period.
Eating a healthy diet is another way to combat vaginal odors, Dr. Streicher adds. Foods rich in probiotics, like miso, kimchi, sauerkraut and yogurt, can help improve the balance of bacteria in your body.
Apple cider vinegar can also fight off the toxins and bacteria that cause vaginal odor and restore the pH balance of your vaginal secretions. You can take a bath with water laced with apple cider vinegar several times a week. Or you can try drinking a glass of water mixed with one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily.
